Affective Domain in Science Education

Image
I did some research on why affective domain is important especially in my major which is Science. After the "open-close tab" series in my google journey, I found this study of Thomas Koballa about the Affective Domain in Science Education.  Below are the highlights of his study.  ------- Framework for the Affective Domain in Science Education By Thomas Koballa Department of Mathematics and Science Education, University of Georgia Introduction The affective domain (from the Latin affectus, meaning "feelings") includes a host of constructs, such as attitudes, values, beliefs, opinions, interests, and motivation. Research in the affective domain is limited by confusing definitions of affective constructs underdeveloped assessment practices, including scale construction affective variables being "add-ons" to investigations of cognitive learning While the affective dimensions of science learning have long been recognized as important, they have rece...

READ: Digital Beats Paper When It Comes to Portfolios, How and Why?

Image
There is something appealing about a paper portfolio—from being able to feel the texture and quality of the paper used, to having a tangible product to hold. And while a well-designed paper portfolio is certainly a work of art, it begs the questions: in this digital age, is it practical? 8 Advantages of an ePortfolio 1 – Provides Enduring Continuity Over time, a paper portfolio will show signs of age and wear. Even if precautions are taken, it will be susceptible to environmental elements (i.e., moisture, sunlight). Whereas an ePortfolio doesn’t need to worry about decay and can be continuously updated with fresh information. 2 – Offers Easy Mobility Thanks to smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc., the average person is well-connected. This means his/her ePortfolio is always a couple of clicks away. A paper portfolio requires a person to physically have it with him/her always, which is cumbersome to lug around. 3 – Free and Reproducible A paper portfolio requires an investmen...

How To Write Affective Learning Objectives?

Image
What is a learning objective? A learning objective states what a student will learn by the end of a lesson or module. It should include a measurable verb from the designated domain cognitive, affective, or psychomotor) and focus on the student. What should I keep in mind when writing a learning objective? A learning objective is not a list of what will be covered during a lesson. If the lesson is one to two hours, you will want to write at least three learning objectives. Three or more hours should have at least three to five objectives. What do you mean by domain? Learning can be divided into three domains: Cognitive : This is the most commonly used domain. It deals with the intellectual side of learning. Affective : This domain includes objectives relating to interest, attitude, and values relating to learning the information. Psychomotor : This domain focuses on motor skills and actions that require physical coordination. We'll be focusing in AFFECTIVE DOMAIN.  ...

25 Simple Rules All Teachers Should Live By By Derrick Meador (ThoughtCo)  There is no single blueprint for success when it comes to teaching—instead, there are about a million different approaches to teaching. In general, no two teachers are alike.  Each has their own teaching style and routine. But while there is no blueprint for teaching, there is a certain code that teachers must live by if they want to be successful. The following list is a general set of rules that every teacher should live by. These rules encompass all facets of teaching, both in and out of the classroom. Rules for Teachers 1. Act in your students' best interest: Always do what you believe is best for your students because as are your number one priority.  2. Whenever making a decision, ask yourself, "How does this benefit my students?" If you can't come up with an answer, reconsider your choice. 3. Build important relationships : Focus on establishing meaningful, cooperative relati...

PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT: Its Pros and Cons

Image
The Pros of Using a Portfolio Assessment 1. A portfolio assessment demonstrates learning over the course of time rather than what a student knows a particular day. 2. A portfolio assessment provides an opportunity for a student to reflect on their learning, to self assess, and to formulate a deeper understanding of the concepts they are learning beyond a simple surface explanation. 3. A portfolio assessment requires a great level of individual interaction between the student and teacher wherein they are always collaborating about the requirements and components going into the portfolio. The Cons of Using a Portfolio Assessment 1. Developing and assessing a portfolio is time-consuming. It takes a lot of effort from both the teacher and the student and is a demanding endeavor in which you can quickly fall behind. 2. Portfolio assessments are very subjective in nature. Even if the teacher utilizes a rubric, the individualized nature of a portfolio makes it difficult to remain ...

The Purpose of Building a Portfolio Assessment

Image
A portfolio assessment is a collection of student works that are associated with standards you are required to learn. This collection of work is often gathered over a long period of time to reflect what you have been taught as well as what you have learned. Each piece in the portfolio is selected because it is an authentic representation of what you have learned and is meant to demonstrate your current knowledge and skills. A portfolio by nature is a storybook capturing a student's progression of learning as they move through the year. A portfolio can include classwork, artistic pieces, photographs, and a variety of other media all demonstrating the concepts that you have mastered. Each item that is selected to go in the portfolio is chosen within the parameters of the purpose of the portfolio itself. The Purpose of Developing a Portfolio A portfolio assessment is often deemed an authentic form of assessment because it includes authentic samples of a student's work....

READ: What Teachers Do Beyond the Classroom When No One Is Looking

Image
What Teachers Do Beyond the Classroom When No One Is Looking By Derrick Meador (ThoughtCo) Many people believe that teachers have an easy job in part because they have the summers off and multiple days off for several holidays. The truth is that teachers spend almost as much time working when students are gone as they do when students are in class.  Teaching is more than an 8 to 3 job. Good teachers stay at school late into the evening, continue to work once they get home, and spend hours on the weekend preparing for the upcoming week. Teachers often do amazing things beyond the classroom when no one is looking. Teaching is not a static job where you leave everything at the door and pick it back up the next morning. Instead, teaching follows you wherever you go. It is a continuous mindset and state of mind that is rarely turned off. Teachers are always thinking about their students. Helping them learn and grow consumes us. It causes us to lose sleep sometimes, stresses ...

Focuses on the growth of the learner.  8. Learner...

Traditional vs. Authentic Assessment

Image
Traditional assessments refer to conventional methods of testing, usually standardized and use pen and paper with multiple-choice, true or false or matching type test items. • Purpose:  evaluate if the students have learned the content; to determine whether or not the students are successful in acquiring knowledge; to ascribe a grade for them; to rank and compare them against standards or other learners. Examples : True or False; multiple choice tests standardized tests achievement tests intelligence tests aptitude  Authentic assessments refer to assessments wherein students are asked to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of what they have learned. •  Purpose : to measure students’ proficiency by asking them to perform real life-tasks; to provide students many avenues to learn and demonstrate best what they have learned; to guide instruction; to provide feedback and help students manage their own learning; to also evaluate student...

ASSESSMENT FOR/OF/AS LEARNING!

Image
Assessment FOR Learning: Informal-formative-alternative assessments can best serve the purpose of assessment FOR learning as they continuously inform and guide instruction, and help students become better learners. Assessments are integrated with instruction and help teachers monitor students’ progress, identify their learning needs and adjust their instruction accordingly. They also give feedback to students and help them become self-directed, metacognitive and successful learners. Assessment AS Learning: Informal-formative-alternative assessments can also very well serve the purposes of assessment OF and AS learning. There are various informal-formative-alternative assessment strategies (e.g. journals, self and peer assessments) that can help students become self-reflective and be good managers of their own learning, making adjustments and developing more effective learning strategies, hence serving the purpose of assessment AS learning . Assessment OF Learning: At the sa...

MYTHS IN ASSESSMENT

Image
Assessment Myths Find out the facts behind common assessment myths!  Myth 1 Assessment is just the latest fad in higher education The Reality Assessment has been -Common practice in higher education for over thirty years -The emphasis of accreditors for at least twenty-five years -A formal expectation of all regional accreditors since 2004. Myth 2 Assessment is just about collecting evidence in case the Higher Learning Commission wants to see it some time The Reality Collecting evidence isn’t enough Assessment needs systems and strategies that produce actionable evidence Assessment is Closer to standardized and coordinated individual practice and further from bureaucracy? Myth 3 Assessment strategies need to be objective and uniform The Reality Most judgments about student performance are subjective What makes strategies “valid” is the consistent application of criteria Consistency builds over time, with practice Myth 4 Grades ought to be a good enough indicator of stud...
